I have been learning Chinese the last month or so and so far I have learned 38 out of 781 words in HSK Level 1 Mandarin Chinese. It might seem like a low number of words but it is also misleading. I have learned the simplified traditional Chinese character as well as the Pinyin for the words. I’ve also learned the pronunciation. With that taken in to account, that’s a lot of info.
– [ ] ma1 ma5 is the pinyin for Mother. This is the character 妈妈 . And it’s pronounced *mah mahhhhh*
The more I learn, the easier it seems to be to recognize certain words. I feel so accomplished in the little time I’ve been learning it. Its in a way similar to learning Japanese. I have held on to quite a few words in Japanese but I haven’t used it as much as I did when I was in college and growing up so sometimes it takes a minute to recall.
With Chinese, my lessons have been three-fold. I have been using an app on my phone called Memrise, a video series called, *Chinese with Mike* and finally, Rosetta Stone app on my phone. (I’m also using it on my computer but that’s to help me with my Japanese)
All of this has been helping me out a lot. It’s been helping me in ways that I didn’t think would be possible. The last month or so, has been quite productive for me creatively. Learning a new language and also working in an old graphics program that I haven’t used since freshman year (Illustrator – I design logos.) Right now I am in a good space and I hope to keep it going. I know it’s been a minute since I’ve blogged but after blogging for some many years straight every week, I think my mind needed it. I promise that I plan on getting back to a regular blogging schedule soon.
